Last weekend was FAB.  I got my iPhone on Friday, so spent a good bit of Saturday morning setting it up and downloading apps – fun, fun, fun!  Then, we went to visit some friends in the afternoon and went to their village fete.  It was a gorgeous, cloudless sunny day – a perfect day for a road trip – and we had a fantastic time with our friends and their girls.  So, how else can you cap off the perfect summer day except with burgers, fries and ice cold beer???

And now, the mister and I have a new favorite burger that leaves all other burgers in the dust.  Meaty, juicy and with a rich tomatoe-y taste and a bite of horseradish, it will blow you away.  Imagine all the flavors that make a bloody mary yummy – tomato, black pepper, horseradish and celery seed – and add it to the luscious savoriness of a burger, complete with the smoky taste from the grill and what have you got?  A party in your mouth, that’s what!

And do yourself a favor – splurge and get really good burger buns.  Don’t buy the plastic white ones.  You’ll want something that will do justice to the fillings.

This recipe comes straight from my food hero, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall – you can’t improve on perfection.

Bloody Mary Burgers

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 tsp horseradish (grated, not sauce)
  • 1/2 tsp celery seed
  • Hot sauce (I like Crystal) – a good few shakes
  • 1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • salt and a really good grinding of pepper

Sauce

  • 2-3 Tbsp creme fraiche
  • 1 tsp cider vinegar
  • 1 heaping tsp horseradish
  • pinch salt and pepper

Moosh all the ingredients for the burgers together and let sit for at least an hour before forming into patties and cooking.  In the meantime, mix the sauce.  The burgers are great plain or with a good sharp cheddar melted on top, served with a good dollop of sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion.  Messy (as all good burgers should be) and totally yum!
