I write this a very bitter woman. 

This is one of the best-smelling cookie recipes you’ll ever make – the scent of the cardamom seeds and the orange zest pervade the kitchen and are absolutely intoxicating. 

Or they would be if I didn’t have a headcold. 

At any rate, these are a lovely alternative to plain vanilla sugar cookies – you can use cookie cutters to make them any shape you like and decorate them with a zingy citrus glaze.  Fantastic with a hot cup of tea!

Orange and Cardamom Cookies

  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 8 oz butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • zest of 4 oranges
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 Tbsp milk
  • 

Citrus Glaze

  • 1 lb powdered sugar
  • Juice of 2 oranges (about 1/2 cup)
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 egg white

In a bowl, sift together the flour, salt and cardamom and set aside.  In a small bowl, rub the zest into the sugar until fragrant.  In the bowl of a mixer, cream the butter with the sugar mixture until fluffy.  Add the egg and milk and beat well, scraping down the sides.  Add the flour mixture gradually until completely incorporated and the dough pulls away from the sides.

Form the dough into 3 discs and let rest in a cool place about 3 hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.  Roll out the dough to between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch and cut out desired shapes.  Bake 9-10 minutes until lightly browned on the edges.  Cool completely before glazing.

To make the glaze, whisk the juice and egg white together before pouring into the powdered sugar and mixing until combined.  Will be runny rather than a thick icing consistency.
